Centennial Yards
The Centennial Yards project involved construction of multi-story apartments within a 50-acre master development in downtown Atlanta. Located in a highly trafficked area near Mercedes-Benz Stadium and State Farm Arena, the site is adjacent to critical bridge structures and features an elevated roadway that remained in place while construction proceeded around it.
United Consulting monitored movement of the existing bridge structures in near real-time using an automated total station and prisms attached to the bridge columns. Both settlement and horizontal movements were monitored to an accuracy of +/-1mm with alarm levels set at 0.25 inch.
The automated monitoring system provided the client with peace of mind while soil was disturbed and excavated around the existing bridge columns and pile caps. The monitoring system confirmed that movement of the existing columns was minimal and did not pose a safety hazard to pedestrians, bridge traffic, or construction workers below.
