HARTSFIELD-JACKSON ATLANTA AIRPORT CONCOURSE D WIDENING

The expansion of Concourse D, the smallest at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, began in 2023 and is expected to be completed by 2029. The expansion will enhance the passenger travel experience and accommodate Aircraft Design Group (ADG) III model airplanes. It includes a 31-foot extension on the east side and a 10-foot extension on the west, increasing its total width to 99 feet, while lengthening this expansion by 288 feet.

Expansion of Concourse D will create a passenger circulation corridor over 60% larger, expand seating and boarding areas by 75%, and enlarge restaurants and restrooms. The new footprint will total 211,000 square feet at the apron and boarding levels, with a 20,000-square-foot airline lounge at the roof level. To maintain operations and minimize revenue impacts, 19 prefabricated modules are being built at a nearby 6-acre modular construction site and installed individually during nighttime hours.

United Consulting was retained to perform on-site construction materials testing, observations, and special inspections. Given the mix of modular and traditional construction, Our oversight included both the modular yard and concourse area. Services included soil compaction testing during preparation of the subgrade, reinforcement and structural steel installation inspections, concrete sampling and laboratory testing, and concrete and masonry inspections. United Consulting also managed the building’s waterproofing and skin inspections.

Our highly experienced Special Inspectors and Field Technicians provide quality assurance and control (QA/QC), inspections, and testing with efficiency and precision. We deliver rapid reports to the construction and design teams, minimizing delays caused by field corrections and retesting. United Consulting’s scheduling and project management teams maintain structured communication with the construction team, ensuring Special Inspectors and Field Technicians are available to assist at every stage of the project. Accurate documentation of inspections and timely reporting provides valuable insights in near real-time to ensure the project remains on schedule, saving time and reducing overall construction costs.
