1050 Marietta Street

The 1050 Marietta Street project involved the construction of a 14-story office building in West Midtown, requiring excavation for a single level of underground parking and the installation of drilled piers for deep foundations. The site’s proximity to the CSX railroad right-of-way raised concerns by the Gilbane Building Company, the client, about potential impacts on adjacent rail operations during drilling and excavation.

To address these concerns, United Consulting monitored the movement of the CSX railroad tracks in near real-time using an automated total station and specialized monitoring prisms that clipped onto the rail without disrupting train operations. Both settlement and horizontal movements were monitored for the project to an accuracy of +/-1mm with alarm levels set at 0.25 inches.

Our automated monitoring systems provided a cost-effective and safe alternative to manually surveying the railroad tracks and saving the client money. Utilizing a manual monitoring system would have required a railroad flagger to halt daily train operations while crews surveyed the tracks, causing disruptions to normal freight train operations.
