Northside Hospital Hapeville Cancer Center

While planning the conversion of a property into the Hapeville Cancer Center, Northside Hospital decided to add an extension to the existing building utilizing a portion of undeveloped land on the property’s east side. United Consulting conducted a geotechnical exploration during the preliminary planning stages to provide the client with a better understanding of subsurface conditions of the proposed addition site. The challenge of this project was the inclusion of a heavy linear accelerator vault in the proposed addition, requiring our geotechnical exploration and subsequent recommendations to specifically account for this unique feature.

The design for this project was being developed concurrently with United Consulting’s preliminary geotechnical exploration. Boring locations were strategically placed within the proposed addition area, with a total of three borings drilled. Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings were conducted to gain an understanding of the subsurface soil conditions and to provide informed grading and foundation recommendations.

By collaborating with the client and project team to assess structural loads and allowable settlement tolerances, United Consulting conducted bearing capacity and settlement analyses. This enabled our experts to recommend shallow foundation support for the building and heavy linear accelerator vault, which accelerated the construction schedule and resulted in significant cost savings compared to foundation options involving ground improvement techniques or deep foundations. Additionally, design recommendations were provided to minimize the impact of new construction loads on the existing building.
